Meterological Reports
Years ago, Bernard Burton, a passionate and seasoned meteorologist, approached the Council with a visionary idea: to establish a weather station in the town. After carefully considering various options and costs, Bernard teamed up with Mr. Carter, the then Headmaster of Emmbrook Secondary School, along with the Geography department. Armed with a few second-hand meteorological instruments, they were ready to take their first weather reading on January 1, 1976.
For years, students and teachers at Emmbrook Secondary School manually recorded weather data, with Bernard meticulously verifying each reading daily. This hands-on approach not only provided accurate weather data but also sparked a keen interest in meteorology among the students.
In 2006, due to school improvement works, the Climatological Station found a new home at Emmbrook Junior School. This move also marked the installation of an Automated Weather Station (AWS), enabling remote data collection and transmission to a PC. Despite the technological upgrade, Bernard continues to oversee the verification, equipment, and site management, ensuring the station’s legacy endures.
Although students no longer take the readings themselves, Bernard is thrilled that the current Headteacher of Emmbrook Junior School supports the continued presence of the Climatological Station. It remains a cherished topic of discussion and a testament to Bernard’s dedication and the school’s commitment to meteorological education.
